Featured Theme: India And Chinese Exclusion Act

In addition to the diverse array of Asian cultures and cuisines, the Taste of Asia Festival this year focused on two central themes: India and the commemoration of the 100-year anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Highlighting India as the featured theme of Taste of Aia allowed the festival to showcase the rich heritage, traditions, and culinary delights of the country. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the vibrant flavors of Indian cuisine, experience traditional performances, and immerse themselves in the cultural aspects that make India unique. Through this spotlight on India, the festival aimed to deepen the understanding and appreciation for the Indian community and its contributions to the multicultural fabric of Canada.

The Taste of Asia Festival also took the opportunity to acknowledge an important historical event, the 100-year anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act. This act, enacted in 1923, imposed severe restrictions on Chinese immigration to Canada and remained in effect for several decades. By commemorating this event, the festival sought to raise awareness about the challenges faced by Chinese communities in Canada’s history and reflect on the progress made towards building an inclusive and diverse society.
